Sainik Schools admit boys in classes VI and IX through an All India Entrance Examination held once in a year. The age of the boys should be between the age of 10-11 year for Class VI and 13-14 years for Class IX as on 1st July 2017 of the year in which admission is sought. Admission are made strictly in the order of merit on the basis of the Entrance Examination, interview and medical fitness.

Within the above reservation classification:-
- 25% of seats are reserved for children of service personal including ex-serviceman.
- 15% reserved for Sc
- 7½% reserved for ST
The scheme of Entrance Examination envisages a written examination followed by an interview and medical test. The medical test will be according to the medical standards prescribed for entry to National Defence Academy.
Medium of Examination – The Entrance Examination is conducted in Hindi and English Medium only. Candidates appearing for Class VI Entrance Examination have the option to take the Examination in regional language i.e Odiya. For Class IX the question paper will be in English only.
Candidates who appeared earler in the Entrance Examination for the particular class are not eligible to apply again.
