Class 12 Chemistry Notes – Chemical Reactions of Alcohols

Dehydration of alcohol:-

Regent used is concentrated H₂SO₄ Δ. It proceeds via carbocation intermediate

Mechanism:-

(i)                  Electrophilic attack of

(ii)                Formation of intermediate:-

(iii)               Removal of proton to give alkene

 

Oxidation of alcohols:-

 

Dehydrogenation alcohols:-

Reagent = heated copper 1⁰ alcohol gives aldehyde, 2⁰ gives ketones 3⁰ alcohol gives nothing (no reaction)
