17th National Science Olympiad (NSO) 2014 – 2015

The National Science Olympiad is organized every year to motivate students to strive for better and deeper understanding of scientific facts and data and to enhance their reasoning, analytical and problem solving skills All school students from class 1st onwards are invited to participate in this NSO,  a unique contest that tests their understanding, level of knowledge, applications and power of reasoning.

  • The comprehensive SQ (Science Quotient) report highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the participant.
  • A comprehensive SSQ (School Science Quotient) report highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the school vis-à-vis national / international performance to enable the schools to improve the quality and level of science education at their end.

Examination Pattern and Scheme

The competition is a written test of 60 minutes duration comprising of objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions. Each correct answer carries one mark. There will be a separate question paper for each class. The question paper will consists of two sections.

For class 1 to 4 :

The participant has to answer 35 questions in 60 minutes.

  • Section I : Mental Ability
  • Section II : Science
  • Section III : Achiever’s Section

For class 5 to 10 :

The participant has to answer 50 questions in 60 minutes.

  • Section I : Mental Ability
  • Section II : Science
  • Section III : Achiever’s Section

For class 11 to 12 :

For class 11 and 12, students can opt for Mathematics or Biology. There will be separate papers for each group.

  • Section I : Mathematics or Biology
  • Section II : Physics & Chemistry
  • Section III : Achiever’s Section

The National Science Olympiad invites students from classes 1st to 12th to participate and excel at International level. The competition is in two levels.

Level 1 : The first level of the test is organized in the respective schools of the participants during the school hours.

  • The level 1 competition is a written objective-type test of 60 minutes duration comprising 35/50 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 1st to 12th.
  • The question paper consists of Science and Mental Ability section.
  • There are separate question papers for each class.
  • The medium of the test is English. CBSE, ICSE/ISC and State Board syllabus is followed for setting the test papers.
  • The exam is conducted during school hours.

Level 2 : The qualifiers to second round would include the following:

  • Top 5% students who appear for the 1st level exam from each class
  • State wise top 10 performing students from each class.
  • Topper of each class where at least 10 students have appeared for the exam

1. First Level Prizes:

  • Participation Certificate to every student.
  • School Topper Medal – Where more than 10 students from one class write SOF’s Olympiad exam.The top 3 rank holders from that class will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals respectively. Where between 5 to 9 students from a class write the SOF’s Olympiad exam –The top rank holder from that class will be awarded a gold medal.
  • Performance Report for each participating School & student.

Student should correctly fill in marks obtained in his/her previous year’s exams in the OMR sheet. Incorrect or incomplete information may lead to disqualification of the child from being ranked. Sample OMR sheet is available on this site and has also been sent to schools.

SSPR (School Science Performance Report) for every participating School Principal/Management and HOD of SCIENCE department /science teachers of the school.
