NATURE OF THE C – X BOND:-

• Due to the electronegativity difference b/w the highly electronegative chlorine atom and less electronegative alkyl group

Halogen attains a partially negative charge and alkyl group attains +ve charge.

• The size of halogen atom increase as we move down the group. Consequently carbon – halogen bond length increase and bond enthalpy decreases

From C – F to C – I

• From F to I electronegativity of halogen decreases hence dipole moment of C –X bond decreases.
