RELATIVE REACTIVITY OF HALOALKANES TOWARDS SN1 AND SN2 REACTIONS:

  • For SN2 mechanism as the steric hind rence of larger alkyl groups in increases the reactivity is get decreases. Thus the reactivity order will be follows.

Methyl halides > Primary halides > Secondary halide > tertiary halides

  • In contrast in SN1 reactions the carbocations are intermediates. Thus greater the stability of the carbocations more stable it will be and hence have higher reactivity.

Thus as order of stability of carbocation is:-

  • The primary benzlic halides show higher reactivity in SN1 reactions than order simple primary halides.

 

 

Relation Reactivity of Haloalkanes:-

Greater the polarity of carbon halogen (C – X) bond more reactive should be the haloalkane thus reactivity of haloalkanes follows the order:-

RI >RBr>RCl> RF
