Eligibility Criteria

FOR CLASS VI : Boys between 10-11 years as on 01 Jul 2017 (i.e boys born between 02 Jul 2006 to 01 Jul 2007, both days inclusive)

FOR CLASS IX: Boys between 13-14 years as on 01 Jul 2017 (i.e boys born between 02 Jul 2003 to 01 Jul 2004, both days inclusive ) and passed class VIII from a recognized school.

 Allocation of Seats

  1. Seats Reserved for SC Category = 15% (On All India Merit base)
  2. Seats Reserved for ST Category = 7 ½% (On All India Merit base)
  3. Seats Reserved for General Category = Total seats – (a+b)
  4. General J&K Domicile Candidates = 67% of (c) above.
  5. General Category Other States = 33% of (c) above
  6. Defence Category means wards of Serving /Retired personnel of Army/Air Force/Navy/Coast Guards = 25% seats of (4) and (5) above.

Exam Pattern & Centres

Admission test for class VI is conducted in English, Hindi and Urdu languages. The test for class IX is held only in English. The entrance test will be conducted on the 2nd/ 3rd Sunday of April at the following centres :-

  • Nagrota
  • Leh
  • Srinagar

*The marks scored in the entrance exam can be obtained by depositing a fee of Rs. 100/- on completion of admission process only. However, answer script will not be shown/ issued in any case.


The written test is followed by an interview carrying 50 marks for both classes VI and IX. Boys securing minimum 25% in each subject and 40% in aggregate are eligible to appear for the interview. However, only the shortlisted candidates will be called to appear for interview. Number of shortlisted candidates will be decided keeping in view the number of boys to be admitted in that particular academic session. The merit list is prepared on the basis of aggregate marks secured in the written test and interview. In case of a tie, marks for mathematics would be considered. In case of a tie again, the marks for English for class IX and Intelligence Test for class VI will be considered and thereafter, the marks for General Science for class IX and Language for class VI. If a tie still occurs, the boy younger in age will be selected. Merely qualifying in the written test does not confer any right for admission. Boys are selected strictly in accordance with the final merit list. Number of boys to be selected depends on the number of existing vacancies.

The result of written test is published in the leading newspapers of J&K. However, the candidates of other states who qualify in written examination are intimated by post.

Medical Examination

All boys, before admission to Sainik School, are medically examined by a Board consisting of Military Medical Specialists. Standards of health and medical fitness for admission are determined by the standards prescribed for NDA keeping in view the tender age of the boys and scope of their growth. In case of rejection on medical grounds, the parents can appeal against the decision of Medical Board through the School after paying Rs. 100/- (Rs 50/- for SC/ST) for holding a Review Medical board, within 15 days after declaration of medical results.

The State Government as well as Ministry of Defence award scholarships to the boys studying in the Sainik Schools on merit-cum means basis. The award of Scholarship, is however, subject to the decision of scholarship granting authorities and the school does not give any guarantee in this regard.
