Steps involved in nomenclature of alcohols:-

  1. Selection of the longest carbon chain continuity (-OH) hydroxyl Group
  2. Give the least no. to the carbon which (-OH) Group is attached
  3. Replace from the name of respective alkane by –ol
  4. Give suffix di four two (-OH) groups tri (for 3) and tetra (for 4), penta (for 5) (-OH) Groups attached.

For Example       4      3        2     1

                            CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2 -OH

Having 4 carbon series name → Butane OH group is attached on 1.

Carbon atom thus its name is

Butanol or Butan -1 -0l
