Multi-Step Reaction:
When more than one stoichiometric equation is used to represent the observed changes i.e. Series and Parallel reaction.

Series reaction:-
The reaction which occurs in series to get final product. In series reaction we have a byproduct.
A→R→S

Parallel reactions:-
The reactions which occurs in parallel, implies simultaneously two different products are obtained from same reagent.

RATE OF REACTION:

(i) Average Rate:

The rate measured over a long time interval called average rate

KE Average Rate Reaction

Important point:

  • Negative sign before reaction rate signifies a decrease in concentration.
  • Positive sign before reaction rate signifies an increase in concentration.

Negative sign before reaction rate signifies a decrease in concentration.

(ii) Instantaneous rate :

  • The rate of change of concentration of reactant or product over a very small interval of time (rate at any particular instant)
  • Instantaneous, rate is more practical rather than average rate.

KE Instantaneous rate

The tangent at any point on the graph gives it’s the rate of the reaction.
