Q.1: How does Douglas make clear to the reader the sense of panic that gripped him as he almost drowned? Describe the details that have made the description vivid.
Ans : Douglas tells about his experience when the fear of drowning grips him. He faced a series of misadventures while learning to swim at YMCA. He was pushed into the water by a well built boy but his was confident that he would come out safely. The pool was only 9 feet but Douglas felt it to be very deep. When he tried to push himself upward he failed. He started searching for rope, ladder and water wings. He failed to find anything except yellow water all around him. He couldn’t do anything to save himself, all his efforts failed. His legs became paralysed. His lungs and legs were throbbing. His vision was getting blurry. His legs and arms couldn’t move. He was trembling with fear.
Q.2: How did Douglas overcome his fear of water?
Ans : It is important to overcome fears in order to enjoy life. Dougals was determined to fight his fears in order to enjoy life. He practised daily with his instructor for hours. He made it a point to practice daily in order to overcome his fears. By practising a lot he overcame his fear. He practised at different places in order to gain more confidence.
Q.3: Why does Douglas as an adult recount a childhood experience of terror and his conquering of it? What larger meaning does he draw from this experience?
Ans : Douglas was determined to fight his fears as it had deep meaning for him. He wanted to conquer his fearful past. The real terror is in death as Roosevelt had once said “all we have to fear is fear itself”. Douglas had experienced both the sensation of dying and the terror that it can produce, the will to live had grown in intensity.
