Question & Answer
Q.1: What imagery does the poet use to delineate summer’s day more picturesquely than any painter could?
Ans : The poet uses personification to delineate summer’s day more picturesquely than any painter could. Poet uses various compound words like : "The Sun shone whole at intervals…..were optional" - shows that the sun is playing the game of hide and seek with the clouds referred to as his "Estates". Insects humming, the chirping of birds, and wind playing through the leaves, which leaves an impact of musical beauty to the perfect summer day. The way the scene is described “A bird sat careless on the fence – One gossiped in the Lane” clearly tells it is a pleasant summer day when everything is in its perfect bloom. The display of birds, flowers, orchards, tune from miniature creatures, very nicely delineates a summer’s day. In this very unique way, the poet tries to personify the various elements and portrays more beautifully than any painter could.
Q.2: What do you understand by ‘Psalteries of Summer’?
Ans : “Psaltery” is an ancient musical instrument played by plucking strings. The metaphor “Psalteries of Summer” refers to all the sounds that the poet can hear in nature on a summer day. The sound is “enamoring the ear” as one does not get tired of hearing it. Here, “remotest – when most fair” poet means to convey that when heard from a distance the sound is more fair.
Q.3: In which lines are creatures attributed with human qualities? How does this add to the beauty of the Summer’s day?
Ans : The creatures are attributed to human qualities in the first and fifth stanza. “The Trees like Tassels hit – and – swung ……Accompanying the Sun –“ In the first stanza, the poet tells, the “Tune” formed by mini creatures in the sun, trees branches swing in the air as tune hits their ears. The dancing of the tree is similar to that of humans dancing to celebrate their happiness. Small insects and birds play the music that is heard by trees and they dance to their tunes. “A Bird sat carelessly on the fence ...Just winding round a Stone “ In the fifth stanza, two birds are compared to village women gossiping in the sunshine. The birds sit carelessly on the fence and chirp with each other without any worries. The snake is attracted to two birds as he has been charmed by the “silver gossip”.
Q.4: How would you explain the image of the ‘Hindered Flags’?
Ans : The image of “Hindered Flags” means birds have soared on the stem they are yet to bloom. They have not bloomed fully before they could dance in the wind. They have to bloom fully before they dance in open as trees do. They have slit open the tough green calyx before they could bloom. Hence, the “Hindered Flags” depicts flowers that have not bloomed fully.
Q.5: Why are the pronouns referring to the Sun capitalised?
Ans : The pronouns accompanying Sun are in the capital because they show Sun is the authority under whom everything survives. The capitalization of pronouns show the importance of the sun for the survival of other things like plants, trees, insects, birds, they cannot survive without their king who is no other than Sun.
