- The student must be studying in Class 8 in a government, government-aided or local-body school in Andhra Pradesh.
- Parental/family income must not be more than ₹3,50,000 per annum.
- The student must have passed Class 7 with at least 55% marks (50% for SC/ST candidates).

The AP NMMS exam has two papers — MAT and SAT — of 180 marks in total, taken on the same day. Both are objective (multiple-choice) papers, available in English and Telugu medium.
