What Is in Equal Groups? (Class 4 Maths Chapter 9)
- Skip counting along a path gives the multiples of a number; numbers on two animals’ paths are common multiples.
- Things set in equal rows and columns make an array, and an array is a picture of a multiplication statement.
- In 12 × 3 = 36, 12 is the number of groups (multiplier), 3 is the group size (multiplicand) and 36 is the product.
- To multiply a big number, split it into hundreds, tens and ones, multiply each part and add: 125 × 8 = 800 + 160 + 40 = 1000.
- Ten-times and hundred-times just add zeros: 6 × 8 = 48, so 60 × 8 = 480 and 600 × 8 = 4800.
- Division is taking away equal groups until nothing (or only a small remainder) is left, as in 58 ÷ 3 = 19 with 1 wheel left over.
Quick revision – Equal Groups
| Idea | What it means | Example from the chapter | Answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multiple | A number you land on while skip counting | The frog jumps 3 steps at a time | 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 … |
| Common multiple | A number on both animals’ paths | Rabbit (6s) and kangaroo (8s) | 24, 48, 72, 96 |
| Array | Equal rows and columns | Marigold box: 3 rows of 11 | 3 × 11 = 33 |
| Multiplier | Number of groups | 18 boxes of cupcakes | 18 |
| Multiplicand | Size of each group | 4 cupcakes in each box | 4 |
| Product | The answer of a multiplication | 18 × 4 | 72 |
| Doubling | Two equal groups of the same number | Double of 23 flowers | 46 |
| Splitting into tens | Break the multiplier into 10s and ones | 23 × 8 = (20 × 8) + (3 × 8) | 160 + 24 = 184 |
| Multiples of 10 | Ten-times adds one zero | 6 × 8 = 48 | 60 × 8 = 480 |
| Multiples of 100 | Hundred-times adds two zeros | 5 × 4 = 20 | 500 × 4 = 2000 |
| Division as sharing | Same number for each group | 108 people in 9 boats | 12 each |
| Repeated subtraction | Take away equal groups and count them | 58 wheels, 3 per tempo | 19 tempos, 1 wheel left |
