In accordance with the National Policy of Education (1986), Government of India started Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs). Presently the JNVs are spread in 28 States and 07 Union Territories. These are co-educational residential schools fully financed and administered by Government of India through an autonomous organization, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti. Admissions to Class VI in JNVs are made through the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas Selection Test (JNVST). While the admission in Class IX will be done through an All India level Admission Test. For Class XI, admission will be made on the basis of performance of students in Class X Board Examinations by CBSE / State Education/ other recognised Board.
JNV Admission 2020: Class 6th, 9th and 11th
Education in the schools is free including board & lodging, uniform and textbooks, a sum of Rs. 600/- per month is collected from the students of Classes IX to XII only towards Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi. Students belonging to SC/ST categories, Girl students and the students whose family income is below poverty line (BPL) are exempted. Vikas Nidhi will be charged Rs.1500/- per month or actual children education allowance received by the parent per month whichever is less.
JNV Admissions
Objective of the Scheme
- To provide good quality modern education including a strong component of culture, inculcation of values, awareness of the environment, adventure activities and physical education to the talented children predominantly from rural areas.
- To ensure that students attain a reasonable level of competency in three languages.
- To promote national integration through migration of students from Hindi to non-Hindi speaking State and vice-versa.
- To serve in each district as focal point for improvement in quality of school education in general through sharing of experiences and facilities
State-wise Distribution of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas
According to the Navodaya Vidyalaya Scheme, one Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is to be set up in each District in a phased manner. At present, 661Vidyalayas are sanctioned in 28 States and 07 Union Territories, out of which 636 are functioning. The State-wise distribution of JNVs sanctioned is as under:

Eligibility Criteria
For the sake of the candidates, eligibility criteria for Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) is given below.
For JNVST Class VI Admission
A candidate seeking admission must not have been born before May 01, 2007 and after April 30, 2011 (Both dates are inclusive). A candidate appearing for the selection test must be studying in Class-V for the whole of the academic session 2019-20 in a Government/Government aided or other recognized schools or ‘ B’ certificate competency course of National Institute of Open Schooling in the same district where he/she is seeking admission. A Candidate who has not been promoted and admitted to Class-V before last date of application form is not eligible to apply. No candidate is eligible to appear in the selection test for the second time, under any circumstances.
For Class IX Admission
Only those candidates who are studying Class VIII during the Academic Session 2019-20 in one of the Govt./Govt. recognized schools of the district where the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is functioning and where admission is sought, are eligible. Candidate appearing for the admission test must qualify/ pass Class VIII in the academic session 2019-20 from a Govt./Govt. recognized school in the district where he/she is seeking admission. A candidate seeking admission must be born between May 01, 2004 and April 30, 2008 (both days inclusive).
For Class XI Admission
Date of Birth of the candidate is to be between June 01, 2002 to May 31, 2006 (both days inclusive). This is applicable to all categories of candidates including those who belong to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The candidate must have passed Class X from a recognized school (affiliated to CBSE or any other State Education / other recognised Board) of the State where the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is located during the academic session 2019-20.
Selection and Admission
Selection in the test will not vest any right on the candidate to secure admission into the JNV. At the time of seeking actual admission, each selected candidate will have to produce all relevant certificates, as prescribed by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti. Until admission, the selection s provisional only. Candidates are advised to apply for TC from parent school only after the verification of documents and confirmation of admission by the respective JNV.
Marks obtained by candidates (both selected and not selected) in the test are not communicated. 3.4) There is no provision for re-evaluation of the answer scripts or re-totaling of marks, since the result is processed through computer and sufficient care is taken to ensure accuracy through various checks while processing the result. Candidates will be considered for the admission only into that Vidyalaya for which he/she has appeared for Selection Test.
At the time of admission, candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes (SCs) Scheduled Tribes (STs) & Other Backward Classes (OBCs) categories will have to produce the required Scheduled Caste/Tribe or OBC Certificate issued by the competent authority.
Selection of students will be done as per following steps:
a) District wise merit list will be prepared and students will be selected against the vacancies.
b) After selecting students against the vacancies in the JNV of the district, a common merit list will be prepared at State level. After step a) the vacancies exist in any of the JNV of the same State will be filled from the State level merit list by considering the option exercised by the candidate.
c) After selection by step a) & b), if the selected candidate does not join even after making all efforts, vacant seats will be filled only from State level merit list.
Examination Scheme
For JNVST Class VI Admission
The selection test will be of two-hour duration from 11:30 am to 01:30 pm and will have 3 sections with only objective type questions. There are 80 questions in all for 100 marks.

A single test booklet comprising of all the three sections will be given to each candidate. Additional time of 30 minutes will be allowed for “ Divyang students” (differently-abled students)
For Class IX Admission
Selection Test will consist of questions from the subjects of Mathematics, General Science, English and Hindi. Difficulty level of the test paper shall be of Class VIII. The test will be of objective type with 2 ½ hours duration without any break.

For Class XI Admission
Admission of students will be made against available vacancies in Class-XI on the basis of marks secured by students in Class-X Board Exam. Streams available in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas will be allotted to students as per the criteria decided by the Samiti for allocation of streams to the students joining Class-XI as under:
