What Is in Winds of Change? (Class 9 English Chapter 3)
- Winds of Change (prose, pages 69–73) traces the pankha from Ajanta’s wall paintings to temples, royal courts and trade routes.
- Each region makes its own fan: appliqué, zardozi and brass (Rajasthan), mirror-work, beads and leather (Gujarat), sola and palm leaf (Bengal), bamboo (Bihar).
- Technology has made pankhas mostly decorative; celebrations, workshops and exhibitions can save the craft and the artisans’ livelihood.
- Canvas of Soil (poem, Maya Anthony): three AABB stanzas built on one metaphor — the garden as a painting, made by those who till the soil.
- Extra readings: O. Henry’s The Last Leaf, where a painted leaf saves a girl’s life, and Toru Dutt’s sonnet A Sea of Foliage Girds Our Garden Round.
- Language work: word pairs with and, fixed expressions, collocations and the present perfect tense.
