What Is in Learning Together? (Class 7 English Unit 1)
- The Day the River Spoke (Kamala Nair): Jahnavi, nearly ten, has never been sent to school. The River tells her girls can do as much as boys; she slips into class, and the teacher talks to her father.
- Try Again (Eliza Cook): a narrative poem (ABAB rhyme). King Bruce, ready to give up, watches a spider fail nine times and succeed on the next try, and he tries again too.
- Three Days to See (Helen Keller): given sight for three days, she would see her friends, then the dawn and museums, then city life. Use every sense as if you would lose it tomorrow.
- Grammar: nouns and personification, prepositions vs adverbs, and modal verbs (can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, ought to).
- Vocabulary and devices: sound words, Indian words in English (catamaran), words of distance, sensory words; alliteration, metaphor and simile.
