What Is in Wit and Humour? (Class 7 English Unit 2)
- The unit has three humorous texts: a story, a nonsense poem and a two-scene play.
- Animals, Birds, and Dr. Dolittle (Hugh Lofting): the parrot Polynesia teaches John Dolittle animal language; he cures a plough horse with green spectacles and becomes famous among animals worldwide.
- A Funny Man (Natalie Joan): a polite man wears a shoe on his head, offers a currant bun as a rose and hops home on his head; the fun lies in mixed-up senses like a “funny sounding sight”.
- Say the Right Thing (G.C. Thornley): Mrs. Shaw teaches Mary to be kind to guests, but Mary’s every remark hurts Mrs. Harding and Mrs. Lee, and she ends with “Oh, must you stay? Can’t you go?”
- Language work: compound words, palindromes, present perfect tenses, phrasal verbs, suffixes, confusable pairs, kinds of sentences, a notice and a limerick.
