Chapter at a Glance

  • The unit has three texts. Change of Heart is a story about Prabhat, a boy who could not bear to lose, and Surya, a new student whose cheerful playing teaches Prabhat what sporting spirit really means.
  • The Winner by Georgia Heard is a short free-verse poem about children who play ball in a neighbour’s field every evening until darkness stops them — and the poem gives the victory to Night.
  • Yoga–A Way of Life explains what yoga is, where the word comes from, what Sage Patanjali wrote in the Yoga Sutras , the benefits of asanas and breathing, and why the WHO and the United Nations have taken yoga to the whole world.
  • The idea that joins all three texts is wellness — health of the body and of the mind. Prabhat learns to enjoy a game, the children in the poem run till they are breathless, and the yoga text shows how breath, movement and calm work together.
  • The language work of the unit covers making small words from a long word , the past perfect tense for the older of two past actions, personification and the shape of lines in poetry, and the practice / practise and advice / advise noun–verb spelling pairs.
  • The listening, speaking and writing tasks include a sports-day announcement, four sport riddles, the three magic words please , thank you and sorry , Prabhat’s diary page, a paragraph on your playtime and a paragraph on the benefits of yoga.
