Question & Answer
Q.1: How are these two matched poems related to each other in content? How is the human being depicted in the Song of Innocence and how is he/she depicted in the Song of Experience? Do we find both aspects working in an average human being?
Ans : Two poems are connected to each other. They both talk about various virtues like pity, mercy, peace, and love. The speaker of the poem depicts the moral virtues of human beings. Human beings are masters of their own virtues.
Q.2: How would you explain the lines For Mercy has a human heart, Pity a human face, And Love, the human form divine, And Peace, the human dress.
Ans : The above line personifies virtues like pity, mercy, love, and peace to human being itself. Poet tells how important is to have virtues in one's life. The virtues are the essence of life. The above-mentioned lines tell about the different virtues and how they affect the lifestyle. A heart with mercy, a face with pity, divine love and if peace were human dress the world will be colorful and it would be heaven on earth. No matter what always strive for your virtue and carry them as part of your personality.
Q.3: How do Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love get distorted in the human brain?
Ans : The four virtues are broken and manipulated in today's time according to their own needs and satisfaction. Virtues today are being divided on the basis of caste, creed, and religion. If these virtues are suppressed the chances that evil may arise to great heights and take over the good. When society is divided on the basis of caste the virtues get distorted and eventually evaporates.
Q.4: Blake’s poetry expresses one aspect of his multi-dimensional view of human experience—of mankind once whole and happy, now fallen into discord and tyranny, from which it must be rescued. Explain with reference to these two poems.
Ans : These two poems have the same meaning they both are easy guides to living peacefully. Initially, compassion was the motto of human life and led to better living to understanding. But today personal gain and selfish nature have overcome the feeling of love and compassion. Today's generation should be made to realize the importance of evil before they fall in its trap. People should be treated with love and understanding in order to make them realize good and kind deeds. Only kindness can make a way to a better life.
Q.5: Certain words in the poem have been capitalised. Can you think of reasons for this?
Ans : The words are capitalised to draw the attention of readers towards the important aspects of the poem. “To Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love” the reason for capitalizing the virtues is to bring it into the notice of readers as it is an important part of life. The main purpose is to tell readers what different virtues mean and denote.
