Question & Answer
Q.1: What could be some of the reasons for the migration of people from villages to cities?
Ans : Migration takes place when a person is not satisfied with his current life and he/she migrates in search of better opportunities. People usually migrate to find a better lifestyle and to gain stability in their economic condition. In some cases people are forced to abandon their present home-like Saheb’s family was forced to leave their homes and migrate to a new area. Partition of 1947 is an example of forced migration.
Q.2: Would you agree that promises made to poor children are rarely kept? Why do you think this happens in the incidents narrated in the text?
Ans : I firmly agree with the above-mentioned statement. Promises to poor children are rarely fulfilled. Poor children are made to daydream about a happy and better future that never turns into reality. In the story, the author promises Saheb that soon he would build a school for him it is later he realizes that he made a promise that he cannot fulfill.
Q.3: What forces conspire to keep the workers in the bangle industry of Firozabad in poverty?
Ans : The inhumane acts of sahukars, the middlemen, the policemen, the keepers of the law, the bureaucrats and the politicians push workers into poverty. The stigma of caste in which they are born also confines them from searching for a better livelihood. The inability to dream of a good future and fulfilling life restricts them from overcoming these forces.
Q.4: How, in your opinion, can Mukesh realize his dream?
Ans : The way Mukesh can realize his true dream is by constantly working towards it with determination. His dream is to get into engineering and drive a car, something that in his family nobody has done. Due to low economic stability, he is bound to face certain hurdles in his dream. Mukesh puts in extra effort by leaning work from the garage and walks long distances to learn new skills that show his determination.
Q.5: Mention the hazards of working in the glass bangles industry.
Ans : There are various harmful effects of working in a bangle company. High temperatures for burning glass makes it extremely harmful for the workers to work there and the air they breathe. Suffocation and bad ventilation cause respiratory problems.
