All 40 questions of the chapter (textbook pages 177 – 191) are answered below, in the order of the book – in-text questions, activities and the end-of-chapter exercises. Each answer is written the way you would write it in the exam.

Let us Discuss — Page 177The Surajkund Fair

Q1What do you see in the picture?
What the chapter-opening picture shows.
Answer

I see the big gate of the Surajkund fair. There are shops, tents, a giant wheel and balloons. Soni, Avi, Dada ji and Dadi ji are going in. The floor has blue and yellow tiles.

Q2Spot things in the picture that look the same from the left and right side.
What the chapter-opening picture shows.
Answer

These look the same from the left and the right:

  • the big gate, with its arch in the middle
  • the butterfly and the domes on top of the gate
  • the two lamp posts in front
  • the tiles on the floor
  • the pointed roofs of the tents

Let us Do — Pages 178–179Make Malas

Q11. Colour the beads in the strings using two colours (●●) to show the malas that you have made.
The eight empty strings printed on page 178.
Answer

Each mala has 8 beads: 4 red and 4 yellow. I made a new order on each string.

Four malas, each with 4 red beads and 4 yellow beads.
Q22. On the previous page, tick ✔ the malas that are symmetrical.
The eight empty strings printed on page 178.
Answer

Tick a mala if its two halves match. Check the beads in pairs: 1 and 8, 2 and 7, 3 and 6, 4 and 5.

One mala gets a tick and the other does not.

Here the first mala gets a tick; the second does not.

Q33. How many such malas can be made? Discuss.
Answer

6 symmetrical malas can be made with 4 red and 4 yellow beads.

All 6 symmetrical malas with 4 red beads and 4 yellow beads.
Q43. (a) Tick ✔ the malas that are symmetrical and cross ✘ the one(s) that are not symmetrical.
1234
The four malas printed on page 179.
Answer

Tick ✔ the 1st and 4th malas. Cross ✘ the 2nd and 3rd.

1234
The same four malas after checking.
  • 1st and 4th: every bead matches its partner.
  • 2nd: top bead purple, bottom bead red.
  • 3rd: the middle beads do not match.
Q53. (b) Now, use 6 beads of one colour and 2 beads of another colour to make symmetrical malas.
Answer

Put the 2 red beads at matching places. Colour the other 6 beads yellow.

The 4 symmetrical malas with 6 yellow beads and 2 red beads.

There are 4 such malas: red at places 1 and 8, 2 and 7, 3 and 6, or 4 and 5.

Let us Think — Page 180Vanakkam! Rangolis All Around!

Q11. Observe the rangolis given below. Are all rangolis symmetrical?
The three rangolis printed on page 180.
Answer

Yes. All three rangolis are symmetrical. If we fold each one down the middle, one half lies exactly on the other half.

Q22. Trace these rangolis on a paper. Fold the tracing paper in such a way that one half of the rangoli lies exactly on the other half.
The three rangolis printed on page 180.
Answer

Trace each rangoli on thin paper. Fold it down the middle: the two halves lie exactly on each other. Open it and fold it across the middle: the halves match again.

Each such fold is a line of symmetry.

Q33. Draw lines in the given rangolis that divide them into two identical halves.
The three rangolis printed on page 180.
Answer

Draw one line straight down the middle and one line straight across the middle of each rangoli.

Each rangoli with one line down the middle and one line across the middle.

Each line divides the rangoli into two halves that are exactly the same.

Q44. Look for other symmetrical things around you. Discuss.
Answer

A leaf, a butterfly, a kite, a window, a door, a blackboard, a plate, a paper boat, and letters like A, H, M, O and T.

To check, fold the thing or hold a mirror down its middle.

Let us Do — Page 181Enjoy Making Rangolis

Q11. Draw and complete the symmetrical rangolis given below. (a)
Rangoli (a): half of it is drawn on the dots.
Answer
Rangoli (a) after both halves are drawn.

The dotted line is the fold line. Draw each shape on the other side, the same number of dots away from the line, in the same colour. Now both halves match.

Q21. Draw and complete the symmetrical rangolis given below. (b)
Rangoli (b): the right half is coloured on the grid.
Answer
Rangoli (b) with both halves coloured.

Colour the left side box by box, like a mirror. Each box gets the same colour as its partner the same distance away on the right. Half-coloured boxes are turned the other way.

Q31. Draw and complete the symmetrical rangolis given below. (c)
Rangoli (c): three half patterns on a dot grid.
Answer
The three patterns after the other half is drawn in red.

Draw the other half of each pattern on the other side of its fold line.

  • Pattern 1 becomes a house.
  • Pattern 2 becomes a plus shape.
  • Pattern 3 becomes a square with a diamond inside.
Q42. Draw some more rangolis in your notebook that are symmetrical.
Answer

Draw a line down the middle of the page. Draw shapes on one side. Draw the same shapes, the same distance from the line, on the other side. Colour matching shapes alike.

You can use the dot grid on page 192 of your book.

In-text Questions — Page 182Make Masks!

Q1Let us make the mask of a cat…
Answer
1. Fold2. Draw3. Cut4. Open
Making a cat mask from a folded sheet of paper.

Fold the paper in the middle. Draw half a cat on one side and cut it out. Open it and make the eyes and nose. Colour it and tie a rubber band.

Both halves are cut together, so they match.

Q2Oh! I can only see with one eye. I wonder what’s wrong?
Answer
Soni’s maskAvi’s mask
Soni’s mask and Avi’s mask.

Avi’s mask is not symmetrical. Its two eye holes are not at matching places, so only one hole comes in front of his eye. Soni’s mask is symmetrical, so she sees with both eyes.

Let us Think — Page 183Tit for Tat

Q11. What is the trick the painter is playing? Find things for the painter to draw so that he can no longer play the trick. Draw three such things here.
The story of the painter and Soni.
Answer

The painter drew only half of Soni but asked for the full ₹200. He said a mirror would show the other half.

Sample answer: Ask him to draw things whose two halves are not the same, like these.

Rthe letter Ra teapota shoe
Three things whose left and right halves are not the same.

In-text Questions — Page 184The Mirror Game

Q1Now, you place your counters in such a way that it is the mirror image of my side.
Soni’s sideAvi’s side
Soni has placed four counters. Avi’s board is empty.
Answer
Soni’s sideAvi’s side
Soni’s counters and the counters Avi placed.

Avi puts each counter the same number of boxes away from the line as Soni’s counter: in row 1 next to the line, then 2nd, 3rd and 4th box from the line.

Q2Has Avi placed the counters at the right places? Check it by placing the mirror on the line drawn.
Soni’s sideAvi’s side
Soni’s counters and the counters Avi placed.
Answer

Yes. In every row, Avi’s counter is the same number of boxes from the line as Soni’s counter. With a mirror on the line, Soni’s side looks exactly like Avi’s side.

Q3The counters placed by me are the mirror image of the counters placed by you. Do you agree? Check.
Avi’s sideSoni’s side
Avi placed his counters first. Soni placed hers on the other side.
Answer

Yes, I agree. Counting from the line, the colours match on both sides:

  • Row 1: blue 3rd, red 4th.
  • Row 2: red 3rd, red 4th.
  • Row 3: blue 3rd, red 4th.
  • Row 4: empty on both sides.

Q11. Pick the odd one out and give reasons.
(a)(b)(c)(d)
The four pairs of shapes printed on page 185.
Answer

Pair (c) is the odd one out.

In (a), (b) and (d), a mirror put between the two shapes shows the other shape. In (c) both triangles point the same way. The second is the first turned upside down.

(a)(b)(c)(d)
Pair (c) marked.
Q22. Fill 4 boxes with red colour and 3 with blue colour in such a way that one side is the mirror image of the other.
The empty grid with the dashed mirror line down the middle column.
Answer

Colour boxes in pairs, the same distance from the dashed line. Red: 2 pairs. Blue: 1 pair and 1 box in the middle column, on the line.

One way of colouring 4 red boxes and 3 blue boxes.

A box on the line is its own mirror image.

Q3In how many ways can you fill it? Think, think!
The empty grid with the dashed mirror line down the middle column.
Answer

It can be filled in many ways. Here are two more.

A second way of filling the grid.
A third way of filling the grid.

Every coloured box needs a partner the same distance away on the other side. A box on the line needs no partner.

Q43. Make Micy’s side the same as that of Catty’s side. You can rearrange only three balls in Micy’s side.
Micy’s sideCatty’s side
The two piles of 10 balls each.
Answer

Move 3 balls, one at a time:

  1. Move the single ball to the right end.
  2. Move a ball from the pile of 4 to the pile of 2.
  3. Move one more ball from that pile to the first pile.
