NCERT Solutions for Class 3 Maths Maths Mela Chapter 14 The Surajkund Fair – Questions and Answers
All 40 questions of the chapter (textbook pages 177 – 191) are answered below, in the order of the book – in-text questions, activities and the end-of-chapter exercises. Each answer is written the way you would write it in the exam.
Let us Discuss — Page 177The Surajkund Fair
I see the big gate of the Surajkund fair. There are shops, tents, a giant wheel and balloons. Soni, Avi, Dada ji and Dadi ji are going in. The floor has blue and yellow tiles.
These look the same from the left and the right:
- the big gate, with its arch in the middle
- the butterfly and the domes on top of the gate
- the two lamp posts in front
- the tiles on the floor
- the pointed roofs of the tents
Let us Do — Pages 178–179Make Malas
Each mala has 8 beads: 4 red and 4 yellow. I made a new order on each string.
Tick a mala if its two halves match. Check the beads in pairs: 1 and 8, 2 and 7, 3 and 6, 4 and 5.
Here the first mala gets a tick; the second does not.
6 symmetrical malas can be made with 4 red and 4 yellow beads.
Tick ✔ the 1st and 4th malas. Cross ✘ the 2nd and 3rd.
- 1st and 4th: every bead matches its partner.
- 2nd: top bead purple, bottom bead red.
- 3rd: the middle beads do not match.
Put the 2 red beads at matching places. Colour the other 6 beads yellow.
There are 4 such malas: red at places 1 and 8, 2 and 7, 3 and 6, or 4 and 5.
Let us Think — Page 180Vanakkam! Rangolis All Around!
Yes. All three rangolis are symmetrical. If we fold each one down the middle, one half lies exactly on the other half.
Trace each rangoli on thin paper. Fold it down the middle: the two halves lie exactly on each other. Open it and fold it across the middle: the halves match again.
Each such fold is a line of symmetry.
Draw one line straight down the middle and one line straight across the middle of each rangoli.
Each line divides the rangoli into two halves that are exactly the same.
A leaf, a butterfly, a kite, a window, a door, a blackboard, a plate, a paper boat, and letters like A, H, M, O and T.
To check, fold the thing or hold a mirror down its middle.
Let us Do — Page 181Enjoy Making Rangolis
The dotted line is the fold line. Draw each shape on the other side, the same number of dots away from the line, in the same colour. Now both halves match.
Colour the left side box by box, like a mirror. Each box gets the same colour as its partner the same distance away on the right. Half-coloured boxes are turned the other way.
Draw the other half of each pattern on the other side of its fold line.
- Pattern 1 becomes a house.
- Pattern 2 becomes a plus shape.
- Pattern 3 becomes a square with a diamond inside.
Draw a line down the middle of the page. Draw shapes on one side. Draw the same shapes, the same distance from the line, on the other side. Colour matching shapes alike.
You can use the dot grid on page 192 of your book.
In-text Questions — Page 182Make Masks!
Fold the paper in the middle. Draw half a cat on one side and cut it out. Open it and make the eyes and nose. Colour it and tie a rubber band.
Both halves are cut together, so they match.
Avi’s mask is not symmetrical. Its two eye holes are not at matching places, so only one hole comes in front of his eye. Soni’s mask is symmetrical, so she sees with both eyes.
Let us Think — Page 183Tit for Tat
The painter drew only half of Soni but asked for the full ₹200. He said a mirror would show the other half.
Sample answer: Ask him to draw things whose two halves are not the same, like these.
In-text Questions — Page 184The Mirror Game
Avi puts each counter the same number of boxes away from the line as Soni’s counter: in row 1 next to the line, then 2nd, 3rd and 4th box from the line.
Yes. In every row, Avi’s counter is the same number of boxes from the line as Soni’s counter. With a mirror on the line, Soni’s side looks exactly like Avi’s side.
Yes, I agree. Counting from the line, the colours match on both sides:
- Row 1: blue 3rd, red 4th.
- Row 2: red 3rd, red 4th.
- Row 3: blue 3rd, red 4th.
- Row 4: empty on both sides.
Let us Explore — Page 185Mirror images and tiling
Pair (c) is the odd one out.
In (a), (b) and (d), a mirror put between the two shapes shows the other shape. In (c) both triangles point the same way. The second is the first turned upside down.
Colour boxes in pairs, the same distance from the dashed line. Red: 2 pairs. Blue: 1 pair and 1 box in the middle column, on the line.
A box on the line is its own mirror image.
It can be filled in many ways. Here are two more.
Every coloured box needs a partner the same distance away on the other side. A box on the line needs no partner.
Move 3 balls, one at a time:
- Move the single ball to the right end.
- Move a ball from the pile of 4 to the pile of 2.
- Move one more ball from that pile to the first pile.
These cutouts fill it with no gaps and no overlaps: 6 triangles, or 3 rhombuses, or 2 trapeziums, or 1 trapezium + 1 rhombus + 1 triangle.
(A rhombus is 2 triangles. A trapezium is 3 triangles.)
Let us Do — Page 186Tiling the Paths
- Square: 4 small squares, 2 in each row.
- Rectangle: 6 small squares, 3 in each row.
- Six-sided shape: 1 hexagon and 2 rhombuses.
Let us Do — Page 187Making Tiles, Creating Paths
Sample answer: I joined 1 square and 2 triangles to make my tile, like Avi. I traced it again and again, side touching side, from Start to End. I left no gaps.
Find the piece that repeats, then trace it again and again.
- Path 1: a square with two slanting lines (4 triangles).
- Path 2: blue squares, turned a little, with white triangles between them.
- Path 3: yellow squares with blue triangles on their sides.
In-text Questions — Page 188Giant Wheel
| Who | What they say |
|---|---|
| Soni | Can you guess the stall I am looking at? It is near a kulfi cart. |
| Avi | The one with a blue flag on it? |
| Soni | No, the second stall from there, in front of the yellow roofed stall. |
| Avi | Oh! I got it, where the puppets are kept in the basket. |
They are talking about the stall where the puppets are kept in a basket. It is near the kulfi cart, in front of the yellow-roofed stall. Mark that stall.
Let us Play — Page 188Guess the stall
Sample game: I think of the stall with the blue flag. My friend asks, “Is it near the giant wheel?” I say, “No.” “Is it near the kulfi cart?” “Yes.” “Does it have a blue flag?” “Yes.” My friend has found it!
In-text Questions — Page 189Search for Dada and Dadi
The chaupal is at the top right of the map, to the right of the golden lane. Its sign is a table with an umbrella and two chairs.
Let us Do — Page 190Search for Dada and Dadi
It shows the chaupal. The key below the map has the same picture next to the word Chaupal.
The play area is the green patch with a see-saw, just above the pond. Draw a circle round it.
It shows the parking. On the map it is at the top left, above the blue lane.
There are 2 exit routes: one at the top, at the end of the golden lane, and one on the right, at the end of the red lane.
“Entry” is the way in, so it is not counted.
(a) Walk on the blue lane.
(b) Turn right on the green lane.
(c) You will see a restaurant on your right. Don’t sit there.
(d) Take a left towards the red lane.
(e) Take the first left turn towards the golden lane. Stalls will be seen on the way.
(f) Pass the stalls to find the chaupal, and meet Dada and Dadi.
Blue lane → right on the green lane (restaurant on the right) → left on the red lane → first left on the golden lane, past the stalls → the chaupal is on the right. Dada and Dadi are there.
Sample answer: From the chaupal, walk left to the golden lane. Go up the golden lane and turn left at the corner. Where the lane turns up to the Exit, the ATM is just ahead on your left.
Let us Do — Page 191Out of the fair
Start at the top left. Turn down at the 2nd opening, by the money bag. Go right past the bag, then down and left to the dog. Zig-zag down to the bottom path and go right to the way out.
Sample answer: I started at the top left and turned down near the money bag. I passed the dog, zig-zagged down to the bottom path and went right. I found a money bag and a dog.
