Discuss — Page 21Preparing for the Mela
We get ready before we leave home.
Sample answer: Before a trip, I fill my water bottle. I pack a cap, a snack and a hanky in my bag. I check my bag once more. I get ready on time.
Discuss — Page 24On the Way to the Mela
We may walk, ride a bicycle, or take a bus or an autorickshaw.
Sample answer: I walk to my school because it is near. We go to the market by autorickshaw. To visit my aunt in the next town, we take a bus.
Write — Page 24On the Way to the Mela
Last winter I went to the zoo with my family and our neighbours. We went there by bus. I saw a tiger, an elephant and many birds. We ate lunch under a big tree. I liked the elephant the most.
Write — Page 29At the Mela
The ‘Lost and Found’ booth helps people get back what they have lost — things or people. If someone finds a lost bag or toy, they give it at the booth. The owner gets it back there. If a child gets lost, the volunteers help the child find the family.
The police dog helps the police keep the mela safe. A dog can smell much better than we can. So it can sniff out dangerous things hidden in a bag or a corner. It can also help to find a lost person.
Yes, I have been to the Dussehra mela near my home. I liked the giant wheel the most. From the top, I could see the whole mela. I also liked the hot jalebis and the puppet show.

If I were Rohit, I would first push Dadiji’s wheelchair. Then I would buy a spinning top. I would ride the giant wheel with Sneha. After the magic show, I would wash my hands and eat hot jalebis with rabri.
Find out — Page 29At the Mela
My Dadi walked to the mela with her family. The rides were small and people turned them by hand. A toy cost only a few coins. There were no big lights at night. But she also ate jalebis, just like me!
They are there for safety, in case something goes wrong.
- Fire engine — food is cooked on fires at many stalls. If a fire starts, the fire engine puts it out quickly.
- Ambulance — if someone gets hurt or feels ill, it takes them to hospital at once.
Activity 1 — Page 30Reading a Sketch
Find and circle Rohit and Sneha’s house on the map.
Rohit and Sneha’s house is in the top right corner of the sketch. It is the orange house with a red roof, just below its label. Draw a circle round it.
Find and circle Nita and Radha’s house on the map.
Nita and Radha’s house is near the top middle of the sketch. It is the small pink house with a brown roof, to the right of the bank, just off the library road. Draw a circle round it.
Whose house is closer to the parade ground?
Nita and Radha’s house is closer to the parade ground.
From the parade ground, go along the road past the library. You reach the lane to Nita and Radha’s house first. Sneha and Rohit’s house is further on, at the end of the road.
If you have to go from the police station to the parade ground, which places would you pass through?
You would pass the post office.
Start at the police station. Take the road up to the left. It goes to the post office. From there, the road curves round to the parade ground.
Draw — Page 31Sketch your route to school
Draw your home, your school and the road between them. Draw the places you pass and write their names.
Let us reflect — Page 32A. Discuss in the class
We can help them in many ways, as Dadiji’s family did:
- Invite them to come along.
- Hold their hand and walk slowly.
- Help them get on and off the bus.
- Let them use the seat kept for older people.
- Get a wheelchair if they cannot walk far.
We see many kinds of vehicles:
- To carry people: bus, train, autorickshaw, car, bicycle, scooter.
- To help in danger: ambulance, fire engine, police jeep.
- To carry goods: truck, tractor, cart.
We follow a few simple rules:
- Walk carefully on the road. Watch the vehicles coming from both sides.
- Get on the bus only after it has stopped.
- Sit in your seat. Do not jump around.
- Never put your hands or head out of the window.
- Stay close to the grown-ups.

Let us reflect — Page 33C. Draw in your notebook · D. Role play: Organise a mock mela
Draw and label different vehicles that you see around your school and home.
Draw the vehicles you really see near your home and school. Draw each one simply — a box for the body and circles for the wheels. Write its name below it.
With the help of your teacher, organise a mock mela in your classroom. Discuss and plan the different roles, stalls, and games that are part of a mela. Use learning-teaching materials available locally, e.g., toys, puppets, play money, miniatures, and clay models to set up your stalls and role-play buyers and sellers.
Our class mela has a toy stall, a sweet stall, a bangle stall and a game stall. Some of us are sellers and some are buyers. One child is a volunteer at the Lost and Found booth. Buyers pay with play money.
