No single food gives the body everything it needs.
- Shirin ate only rice and potatoes. She often fell sick.
- Then she ate vegetables, fruits, grains, dal and nuts too.
- She became energetic and healthy.
Each season gives us different food, and our body needs different things in hot and cold weather.
- Mangoes and melons come in summer. Apples come in winter.
- In summer we sweat, so we drink more water, buttermilk and nimbu pani.
- In winter we enjoy warm food, soups and hot drinks.
Healthy food has many kinds of food, cooked at home. It keeps us energetic and well.
- Variety: vegetables, fruits, grains, dal and nuts.
- Home-cooked: food cooked at home is always good to eat.
- Not healthy: eating only one or two things every day, like Shirin’s rice and potatoes.
Food takes a lot of work to reach our plate.
- Farmers grow it in the fields.
- Elders at home cook it for us.
- When we throw food away, all that work is lost.
Some ways to waste less food:
- Take only as much as you can eat. Ask for more later.
- Finish the food on your plate.
- Cover leftover food and eat it at the next meal.
- Share extra food with friends and neighbours.
