Question & Answer
Q.1: What did you think the poem was about when you read the first few lines?
Ans : The poet describes how time affects different cities. The poet A.K Ramanujan mentions different cities and how time affects them. While the clock strikes and time passes there are some changes formed in the city. The things continue to get affected by passing time and in the end. Then the time arrives when everything starts from the beginning.
Q.2: From which line does the import of the title strike the reader?
Ans : The last stanza of the poem, “through the knocked out clockwork, after the riot, a peace-march time bomb, or a precise act of nature in light of lightning” echoes the title of the poem, “Time and Time Again”. It shows that after much communal disharmony good time will come soon. Here I would like to quote “when winters come can spring be far behind”. Only after bad times have passed, then only good days can be experienced.
Q.3: What makes for the differences between the timekeeping of the various clocks? What is the implicit comparison?
Ans : The difference between timekeeping of various clocks the gongs is beaten at different time intervals and with different frequencies. The implicit comparison here means indirect comparison. The frequency at which gong is hit shows conditions of different cities.
Q.4: Why is the act of nature described as ‘precise’?
Ans : Time heals everything. Nothing lasts forever. Time honors one desire at a time. The act of nature is precise as after proper interval nature tries to manage everything. The poem tells how long quarrels by Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian have been settled by passing time. Nature echoes the title constantly.
Q.5: Which of the following reflects the poet’s attitude towards communal disharmony
(i) Critical condemnation
(ii) Helpless acceptance
(iii) Wistful lament
Ans : The critical condemnation reflects the poet's attitude towards communal disharmony. Poet criticizes the communal disputes that arise time and time again. Poet strongly believes that these differences will solve on their own with time silently. The only time is needed and a little break from these matters. Sometimes no discussion is needed on these matters instead time should be given to let the matter dissolve on its own without further issues.
