Chapter at a Glance

• Who is in the story. There are three: a rich merchant in a quiet village, his pet parrot in a cage of gold, and a parrot in the forest who never says a single word. The forest parrot has no name and only one action — yet the whole story turns on it.
• The problem. The parrot is bright, talkative and sharp-minded. It entertains the merchant with stories and songs, and the merchant feeds it well. But “deep inside, the bird longed for the open skies and green trees.” Good food in a golden cage is still a cage.
• The first try — asking. Before a journey the merchant asks his pet what gift it would like. The parrot asks for freedom in plain words: “please let me fly off into the sky.” The merchant refuses at once — “I cannot bear to let you go away.” Asking has failed.
• The second try — a message. The parrot sighs and asks for something small instead: tell my friends in the jungle that I send them greetings from my cage. This looks like a sad little request. It is really a question sent out to the world: how do I get out?
• The answer comes back. In a forest the merchant meets a flight of parrots and gives the message. One parrot drops like a stone from the tree and falls to the ground. The merchant thinks the bird has died of shock. It has not. It is sending back the plan.
• The trick works. Back home, the merchant tells his pet everything. The pet parrot at once falls from its perch to the floor of the cage. The merchant lifts out the still-warm body and puts it on the windowsill. He steps back — and the parrot stirs, stretches its green wings and flies away, saying, “My friend showed me how I could escape and now I can fly in the sky. Goodbye!”
• What the story means. Freedom matters more than comfort. And a sharp mind beats a strong hand. The parrot never breaks a bar of the cage; it makes the merchant open it himself. That is why the story is called The Wise Parrot — and why we may argue about which parrot the title means.
