Chapter at a Glance
- Stanza 1 — three things that sail. “Boats sail on the rivers, / And ships sail on the seas; / But clouds that sail across the sky / Are prettier far than these.” The poet lines up three sailing things. Boats sail on rivers. Ships sail on seas. Clouds sail across the sky. Then she says the clouds are the prettiest of the three. Notice the word sail — it is used for the clouds too, as if the sky were a sea.
- Stanza 2 — three things that bridge. “There are bridges on the rivers, / As pretty as you please; / But the bow that bridges heaven, / And overtops the trees, / And builds a road from earth to sky, / Is prettier far than these.” Now the poet lines up bridges. A bridge on a river is pretty. But the rainbow is a bridge too — a bridge across the sky. It is much prettier.
- What the poem means. The poem is a comparison. Twice the poet says “prettier far than these”. Each time she puts something people have made or something small beside something big and free in the sky. Her point is gentle: the most beautiful things in the world are the ones nobody built and nobody owns.
- The word bow. This is the poem’s key word. A bow is anything bent into a curve. The rainbow is a bow of colours. That is why we say rain + bow = rainbow. The poet never uses the word rainbow in the poem — she calls it “the bow that bridges heaven”, and lets you guess.
- The poet. Christina Rossetti was an English poet who wrote many short, musical poems for children. Her lines are easy to say aloud and easy to remember, because the second, fourth and last lines rhyme — seas / these, please / trees / these.

- The language work (Let us Learn and Let us Write). A — nine anagrams, where you unjumble letters to find a word from the poem. B — a spinning circle of five poem tasks to do with a partner. Then, under Let us Write: A — a travel paragraph of 80–100 words; B — compound words, where a word joins a “friend word” (rain + bow = rainbow); C — words that are both nouns and verbs; D — opposites that all begin with the letter S; E — VIBGYOR, the seven colours of the rainbow in order; F — the colours of kitchen spices; G — designing a Flowerpot Friend.
- The science in the chapter. A scroll on page 37 tells us how a rainbow is made: “When sunlight passes through rain droplets, it splits into these seven beautiful colours.” Sunlight looks white, but it is really seven colours travelling together. A raindrop bends them apart. The order never changes — V I B G Y O R. On page 40 a Did You Know? box adds the other half of the story: Isaac Newton spun a disc painted in the seven colours, and the spinning disc looked white. Split white light and you get seven colours; mix the seven colours and you get white light back.
- Let us Listen asks for five rhyming words for ten words from the poem, and the Note to the Teacher makes the rule plain — listen to the sound, not the spelling. Let us Speak gives two short poems to recite in a happy, an angry and a surprised voice. Let us Do mixes paint colours. Let us Explore ends with boats and with a class talk on human-made things against natural things.
