Chapter at a Glance

• Stanza 1 — the game begins. “In the playground, we gather around, / With a stick and a small gilli to throw, / Gilli Danda, our game is so sound! / We play with joy, watch it go!” The children come together in an open playground. They need only two things — a long stick and a small piece of wood. Here sound does not mean a noise. It means good and strong. So the line means, “our game is a really fine game”.
• Stanza 2 — the swing and the friends. “One, two, three, swing and hit, / With our friends, we never quit! / With every swing, we feel so free, / Oh, what fun it is, you see!” The counting one, two, three is what children really say before a big hit. Quit means to stop or to give up. The players never give up, and every swing of the danda makes them feel free.
• Stanza 3 — the gilli flies. “The small gilli, up high it flies, / Underneath the bright blue skies. / Laughing, playing, having fun, / Under the golden rays of the sun!” The tiny gilli shoots up into the air. The poem ends outdoors, in sunshine, with everybody laughing.
• What the poem is about. It is about the simple joy of playing outside with friends. Gilli Danda costs nothing. Two sticks and an open ground are enough. The poem says that fun does not need money — it needs friends, space and sunshine.
• Why it sits in the unit ‘Ups and Downs’. The gilli goes up when it is struck and comes down when it lands. The whole game is one long up-and-down. That is the picture the unit begins with.
• New Words taught by the chapter: gather, gilli, quit, underneath. The Did You Know? box adds one more fact — Gilli Danda is called ‘tip-cat’ in English.
