- There are some festivals or months in which people like swinging on swings. Collect some information about those festivals or months, and share it with the class.
Chapter at a Glance
- Stanza 1 — the question and the answer. “How do you like to go up in a swing, / Up in the air so blue?” The poet asks you how you like swinging. Then he answers himself: it is the pleasantest thing a child can ever do.
- Stanza 2 — the long view. “Up in the air and over the wall, / Till I can see so wide,” At the top of the swing the child sees over the garden wall. He sees rivers, trees and cattle, all over the countryside.
- Stanza 3 — up and down again. “Till I look down on the garden green, / Down on the roof so brown,” Coming down, the child looks at the green garden and the brown roof. Then he flies up once more — “Up in the air and down!”
- The sound of the poem. In every stanza the first line rhymes with the third, and the second rhymes with the fourth — swing–thing, blue–do, wall–all, wide–countryside, brown–down.
- New words. pleasantest (the most enjoyable), cattle (cows and buffaloes kept by people), countryside (the open land outside a town, with fields and villages).
- The rest of the chapter. Let us Think asks what the poet sees and why he calls the air blue. Let us Learn is ‘Stringing together’ — making each sentence longer than the one before.
