Behind them are brown hills, a leafy tree, some tall pointed trees, a sun, a cloud and a bird. Eight small things in the lower picture are not the same as in the upper one. A short description of the two paintings on page 88, because the book prints them as full-colour art. Look at your own book to find the eight changes.
Chapter at a Glance
- Part I — a new game, an old game. Ravi takes his cousin Prakash to the children’s park. Guneet wants Prakash in the team because “he’s a good runner”. Prakash asks what Lagori is, and everybody looks at him “with great surprise”.
- What Lagori is. Nidhi says it is “actually a game of seven stones”. Imran explains: the seven flat stones are stacked one above the other; one team knocks the pile down with a ball, and the other team rebuilds it while dodging the ball.
- One game, two names. Prakash says, “In Rajasthan, we call this game Satoliya.” Guneet is delighted: in Sundarpur village it is Lagori, in Rajasthan it is Satoliya.
- The rules. Imran adds that the field is marked with a boundary, the players may not go beyond it, and the seven stones are stacked in the centre of the field.
- Part II — the match. The referee blows the whistle. Deepa, the Tigers’ captain, takes the first shot and the stones scatter. Ravi, Deepa, Nidhi and Ravi again put the stones back — and Prakash sets the seventh stone on top just before the final whistle. The Sundarpur Tigers win.
- The lesson. Both teams shake hands and appreciate each other. The villagers clap, the Refree lifts both captains’ hands, and the match “had brought the villagers together, reminding everyone of the simple joys of teamwork”. Deepa says it was even better than video games.
