Chapter at a Glance
- Chinna and Tara. Chinna is a bright boy of grade 4 who lives in a village. His pet is a five-month-old milky white kid named Tara. A baby goat under six months is called a kid.
- The lost money. Chinna sees a pair of shiny tinkling bells at Chacha’s shop. They cost ten rupees. He puts his hand in his pocket and finds that the money Dadaji gave him is missing. He goes home sad.
- Amma comforts him. Kamala asks him gently what happened, wipes his tears and says she will give him money for the bells. She also tells him to be careful with money in future.
- Ten rupees too much. At the market they buy two pineapples at forty-five rupees each. Kamala pays a hundred-rupee note. The fruit seller hands Chinna two ten-rupee notes, which is ten rupees more than the change due.
- The honest choice. Chinna wants to keep it. Kamala asks him how he felt when his own money went missing. Chinna runs back and returns the extra ten rupees. The fruit seller calls him “an honest boy”.
- The bells at last. Pleased with his honesty, Kamala takes him to Chacha’s shop just as it is closing. Chinna pays ten rupees, and the bells tinkle in his pocket all the way home. He ties them around Tara’s neck.
