Chapter at a Glance
- The letter (page 25). The Traffic Police of Bharat write to the children. They say some children come to school on foot, some by bicycle and others by bus. Roads are often busy and, at times, dangerous. So they share some safety tips to keep children safe while walking on, or crossing, the streets.
- Rules 1 to 3 (page 26). Always use the zebra crossing — look for the black and white strip, look right, then left, again right, and cross only when it is safe. Follow the traffic lights — wait for the pedestrian signal to turn green, and never run across the road. Walk on the footpaths — footpaths are meant for pedestrians.
- Rules 4 to 6 (page 27). Hold an adult’s hand when you are near the road, especially while crossing. Use reflective stickers in the dark so that drivers can see you clearly in the evening. Be alert — do not play near roads, and do not use headphones or mobile phones while walking near traffic.
- New Words (page 27). Four words to keep: pedestrian, footpath, reflective, distract.
- The exercises. Let us Think asks three questions about the rules. Let us Learn has True or False, three multiple-choice questions, and eleven symbols to name. Let us Do asks you to sort five activities into safe and unsafe, and to find six mistakes in a busy street picture.
- The grammar (pages 32–34). A naming word or noun names a person, place, thing or an idea. Nouns we can count are countable nouns (apples, buses, chairs). Nouns we cannot count one by one are uncountable nouns (water, rice, air). At the end you write a thank-you letter to the traffic police.
