Chapter at a Glance
- A picture in the newspaper. It was a pleasant evening. Aarav and Ananya were sitting with their Chachi. They saw a picture of a fort in the newspaper, and Aarav asked its name.
- Chachi names the fort. The fort in the picture is the majestic Maheshwar. It was built long ago by Queen Ahilya Bai, and it is famous for its overhanging balconies. It is also known as Ahilya Fort.
- Where it stands. Maheshwar is a place in Madhya Pradesh, just 95 kilometres away from Indore. The fort stands on a hill on the banks of the Narmada River. From there the Queen could see her entire kingdom.
- The queen. Ahilya Bai was a warrior queen of the great Holkar family. She protected her people and built temples, schools and wells. She ruled with kindness and wisdom, and people loved her. A 13-feet tall statue of her still stands in front of the palace, like a guardian watching over her land.
- The fort itself. It is known for its unique style of construction and grand staircases. It was made of special red stones brought from Gujarat and Rajasthan. It overlooks the town of Maheshwar on one side and the Narmada River on the other, and there are many beautifully designed temples near it.
- The Maheshwari sarees. The people of Maheshwar are known for weaving them. They are made from cotton and silk, and the designs are unique. Let us Listen adds that they were first made of pure silk, that they are famous for reversible borders and pallus, and that they are sold in India and abroad today.
