- दरबारी तेनालीरामन से जलते थे। उन्होंने राजा से झूठ कहा कि तेनाली शतरंज के बहुत बड़े खिलाड़ी हैं।
- राजा ने तेनाली को शतरंज खेलने पर मजबूर कर दिया। सच यह था कि तेनाली को खेल आता ही नहीं था।
- तेनाली हर चाल गलत चलते रहे। राजा को लगा कि वे जान-बूझकर हार रहे हैं। क्रोध में राजा ने भरी सभा में मुंडन का दंड सुना दिया।
- तेनाली ने पहली चाल चली — इन बालों पर पाँच हजार अशर्फियाँ उधार हैं। राजा ने कोष से वह रकम उनके घर भिजवा दी।
- फिर तेनाली ने दूसरी चाल चली — मुंडन तो माता-पिता के स्वर्ग सिधारने पर होता है, और अब राजा ही मेरे माता-पिता हैं। राजा घबरा गए और दंड वापस ले लिया।
