Chapter at a Glance
- A community is the people who live near one another and share the same places. In Chandan’s village everybody uses the playground, the road, the shops and the well. The elders meet under the big banyan tree at the corner of the playground.
- Public places belong to everyone. Parks, schools, markets, playgrounds, roads and bus stops are used by all of us — for playing, relaxing and meeting others. People also come together to clean and decorate them on special days, and these shared days make beautiful memories.
- Van Mahotsav is the tree-planting festival. It is celebrated every year in India in the rainy season, from 1 July to 7 July. People plant trees to protect the environment and make the earth greener.
- Work becomes light when it is shared. Sameer brought wood and nails and mended the benches. Babita repaired the street light. Noor brought saplings from her plant nursery. Groups were formed for cleaning, planting, watering and cooking — and the park was ready in no time.
- Communities come together in times of need. In Kanker, Chhattisgarh, the Chinar river overflows in the rainy season. In 2024 the whole community built a simple but strong bridge in just two days, using bamboo, stones and other material.
- Animals live in communities too. In an ant colony some ants collect food, some look after the babies and some guard the home. Bees also share work — gathering food, protecting the young ones and building hives.
- Sharing a meal completes the work. After the planting, the villagers brought vegetables and cereals and ate a community feast on banana leaves. The leaves were later buried in a pit, where they become manure and improve the soil.
