News reached people very late. A reply could take weeks, so by the time it came the news was old. Urgent news, like an illness, could not be sent in time. People could not talk often, so they wrote long letters and waited patiently.

Now a message reaches in seconds. We can talk many times a day, and on a video call we can see and hear each other. We need only a phone and the internet — no paper, stamp or postbox.

Check the news before you share it.

1. See who sent it.
2. Look for the same news in a newspaper, on television or on a government website.
3. Look at the date. Old news is often sent again as new.
4. Ask an elder or a teacher.
5. If you cannot check it, do not forward it.

I use the school bus the most. I go to school in it six days a week. It is cheap, and my friends travel in it too.

All of these make travel faster and connect places better.

Yes, it is different. Our elders walked much more. Today we use faster vehicles.

I would send the money by phone, because it reaches in a few seconds and I need not go anywhere. But to send money to my great-grandmother in the village, who has no smartphone, I would use a Money Order. The postman gives her the cash at home.

Yes, I get twenty rupees a week. I keep ten rupees in my piggy bank and spend the rest. When the piggy bank is full, my mother puts the money in my bank account.

Saving is important because it gives us money when we need it later.

• We can buy something costly that one week’s money cannot buy.
• Sudden needs come up — a doctor’s visit or a broken cycle.
• Saved money helps the family in a hard month.

1. Put some money in the piggy bank first, before spending.
2. Carry water and a snack from home instead of buying them.
3. Wait a day before buying something; you may not need it.
4. Take care of your things so you need not buy them again.
5. Put the coins left at the end of the week into the piggy bank.

(b) ATM means Automated Teller Machine. It gives us cash when we put in our ATM card and secret number (PIN). It helps us take out money any time, even at night, without waiting in a queue at the bank.
