Chapter at a Glance
- Face the rising Sun and you have found east. The Sun comes up in the east every morning. Stand facing it. Now your left hand points north, your right hand points south, and your back is towards west. These four are called the cardinal directions — the four main directions. Say them in order as you turn: N, E, S, W.
- Every map has a direction arrow. It is a small sign in a corner with N, E, S and W on it (in the Hindi book: उ., पू., द., प.). On almost every map north is at the top, so east is to the right, west is to the left and south is at the bottom. Find that arrow first, before you read anything else on the map.
- Reading a picture map. In the bird-watching camp map, you find a tent by asking which side of what. The tent west of the road is on the left of the road. The tent south of the lake is below the lake. One clue at a time, and each tent gets its colour.
- Directions inside a room. A room can be mapped too. Stand in the middle, put a direction arrow on your drawing, and then say where each thing is — the window is north, the bed is east, and so on. The direction of a thing is always given in relation to the person standing in the middle.
- A street map shows roads, buildings and a route. Roads have names, like Hospital Road and Park Road. A dotted line shows the bus route. Little markers S1 and S2 show the bus stops. To describe a journey you say two things at every corner: which road and which direction — “turn right onto Park Road and drive south”.
- Left and right change; north and south do not. If the bus is driving north and turns right, it is now driving east. If it is driving east and turns right, it is now driving south. Draw the compass on your page and turn it with the bus — that is the safe way to fill these blanks.
- A metro map is a map of lines, not of streets. Each colour is one metro route — Yellow Line, Blue Line, Magenta Line. A plain circle is a station. A circle with two colours in it is an interchange — the station where you can get off one line and get on another. A journey with fewer changes and fewer stations is usually the better journey.
- A grid gives every place a pair of numbers. On the zoo map the columns are numbered 1 to 12 across, and the rows 1 to 12 up. Start at 0. Move first across (east), then up (north). The panda sits where column 1 meets row 1, so we write its place as (1,1). The first number is always the column, the second is always the row. That is why (4,1) and (1,4) are two different animals.
- Distance on a grid. On the anthill grid one square is 1 cm across and 1 cm up. So the ant’s journey can be measured: “2 cm east”, “3 cm north”. Count the squares, not the pictures. A journey that only goes east and south is shorter than one that goes down past the food and comes back up.
