That direction is east. The Sun rises in the east every morning, so facing the rising Sun means facing east.

His left hand is pointing in the north direction. When you face east, north is on your left.

His right hand points to the south.

West is behind Manu — the side away from the rising Sun.

1. Keep facing the rising Sun. That is east.
2. West is the exact opposite of east.
3. So west is straight behind your back. Turn round halfway and you are facing west.

Birds find their way using the Sun by day, the stars at night, the Earth’s magnetism (many birds can sense which way is north, like a compass) and landmarks such as rivers, coasts and mountains.

Colour the tent at the top left blue. It is the only tent on the west (left) side of the road.

Colour the middle tent — the one standing at the top edge of the lake — green. It is nearer to the lake than any other tent.

Colour the top tent on the east side of the road, near the yellow-leaved trees, purple. Going north (up) from the green tent, it is the next tent you reach.

Colour the bottom tent — the one below the lake — yellow. South is down, and this tent is straight below the lake.

Draw a new tent on the right-hand side of the lake, in the open grassy space between the lake and the trees at the right edge.

The window is to the north of the girl. It is on the far wall, at the top of the picture, and N is at the top of the direction arrow.

The bed is to the east of the girl. It is on her right, against the right-hand wall, and E is on the right of the direction arrow.

The cupboard is to the west of the girl. To be exact, it is north-west — it stands against the far wall, on the left side.

The bedside table is to the south-east of the girl — that is, to the right and in front of her.

Steps: (1) Find east — the wall where the morning Sun comes in. (2) Draw the room from above as a rectangle. (3) Draw a direction arrow with N, E, S and W. (4) Draw each thing where it really is, and a dot for yourself in the centre.

Write the things that lie in the direction the E arrow points on your own map.

Write the things that lie in the direction opposite to east on your map.

1. Stand at the “me” dot again.
2. Turn to face the W arrow. This is the wall the evening Sun shines on.
3. Write down the things you see on that side.

Write the things that lie towards the N arrow on your map — the direction your left hand points when you face east.

Write the things towards the S arrow — the direction your right hand points when you face east.

Each child must walk to the stop that is nearer to their house — Stop 1 (S1) in the north, beside the hospital, or Stop 2 (S2) in the south, beside the shopping centre.

It will take a right turn onto Hospital Road, driving in the east direction. (Facing north, a right turn makes the bus face east.)

It will turn right onto Park Road, driving in the south direction. (Facing east, a right turn makes the bus face south.)

Prem’s house and Raju’s house. They are across Park Road, to the right (east) of Jaideep’s house.

Route: Ravi’s path → the lane south of his house → east to the main road → north to Hospital Road → east along Hospital Road (past S1) to Park Road → cross to the Children’s Park.

Stop 1 (S1) is closer to Lali’s house.

Nearest stop: Stop 1 (S1).

Route: Golu’s path → the lane just south of his house → east along the lane to Park Road → left (north) up Park Road to Hospital Road → left (west) along Hospital Road to S1, in front of the hospital.

Prem has to move towards the south. After a few steps west along his lane to Park Road, he walks south down Park Road to S2.

The key (the box marked KEYS at the bottom of the map) has ten entries. Eight are metro lines, and two tell you what the little circles mean.

Each colour is one metro route — one line along which the trains of that colour run, from one end of the city to the other.

Qutb Minar is on the Yellow Line, low down on the left of the map, between Chattarpur and Saket. Supreme Court is on the Blue Line, a little to the east of Rajiv Chowk.

Three routes:

1. Yellow Line to Rajiv Chowk, then Blue Line to Supreme Court.
2. Yellow Line to Hauz Khas, Magenta Line to Botanical Garden, then Blue Line to Supreme Court.
3. Yellow Line to INA, Pink Line to Mayur Vihar, then Blue Line to Supreme Court.

They must change once more, at Botanical Garden — from the Magenta Line to the Blue Line.

Route 1 — the Yellow Line to Rajiv Chowk, then the Blue Line to Supreme Court. It has 14 stations between Qutb Minar and Supreme Court (15 stops counting Supreme Court), fewer than any other route.

The best route is the Yellow Line from Qutb Minar to Rajiv Chowk, then the Blue Line to Supreme Court — it has the fewest stations and only one change of train.

Steps: draw your school as seen from above; draw each place with a simple symbol; make a key box with every symbol and its meaning; add a direction arrow; then hide a few small objects in real places.

Mark each hiding place with a small red circle or a red flag, exactly where the object really is, and add “hidden object = red circle” to your key.

This one is done for you in the book, and the picture agrees: 2 cm towards the east.

3 cm in the north direction.

3 cm in the west direction; then 2 cm in the south direction.

5 cm towards the south, then 3 cm towards the east, and finally 2 cm towards the north.

The shortest route is 6 cm long: 3 cm east, then 3 cm south (or 3 cm south and then 3 cm east — both measure 6 cm).

Some other routes that also reach the apple:

Move 4 steps towards east and reach the fourth column. Then move 1 step north and reach the first row.

At (1,4) there is the snake — the cobra with its hood raised, on the left-hand side of the map.

Read each pair as “go across this many, then go up this many”.

This is the last question turned round. Now you start at the animal and read off its two numbers.

None of these six points has an animal on it. Use the same two moves each time: across first, then up.
