Chapter at a Glance

  • A fraction is a part of a whole. In 1/3, the bottom number 3 (the denominator) tells how many equal parts the whole was cut into. The top number 1 (the numerator) tells how many of those parts we took. Cut a chapati into 4 equal parts and take 3 — you have 3/4 of the chapati.
  • The whole matters. Tamanna says 1/3 of one chocolate is bigger than 1/2 of the other, and she is right — her chocolates are different sizes. 1/2 of a 4-square bar is 2 squares; 1/3 of a 9-square bar is 3 squares. To compare two fractions fairly, both must come from the same whole. Then 1/2 is always more than 1/3.
  • Equivalent fractions name the same part with different numbers. Cut a 1/2 piece into 2 equal bits and you get two 1/4 bits, so 1/2 = 2/4. Cut each part into more parts and both numbers grow together: 1/3 = 2/6 = 3/9 = 4/12. To make one, multiply the top and the bottom by the same number. 2/5 = (2×3)/(5×3) = 6/15.
  • Same denominator — count the pieces. If the pieces are the same size, more pieces means more. 2/3 > 1/3, because 2 pieces of one-third beat 1 piece of one-third.
  • Same numerator — bigger bottom, smaller piece. Cut a paratha into 6 and each piece is smaller than if you cut it into 5. So 1/6 < 1/5, and therefore 4/6 < 4/5. The bigger the denominator, the smaller each piece.
  • Fractions greater than 1. Two halves make one whole, so 5 halves = 5/2 = 2 wholes and 1 half = 2 1/2. Four one-fourths make one whole, so 9 one-fourths = 9/4 = 2 1/4. On a number line you just keep stepping the same-sized jump past 1.
  • Compare with 1. If the top is smaller than the bottom, the fraction is less than 1. If the top is bigger, it is more than 1. If they are equal, it is exactly 1. So 7/8 < 1 and 8/6 > 1, which settles 7/8 < 8/6 without any other work.
  • Compare with 1/2. Double the top. If the doubled top is less than the bottom, the fraction is less than half. 3/9: double 3 to get 6, and 6 is less than 9, so 3/9 < 1/2. 5/8: double 5 to get 10, and 10 is more than 8, so 5/8 > 1/2. One fraction below half and one above half — the comparison is done.
