- विद्याधरः प्रथमम्, प्रीतिः द्वितीयम्, हेमलता तृतीयं स्थानं प्राप्तवती। एकः छात्रः चतुर्थः, एका पञ्चमी तथा एका नवमी अस्ति — किन्तु दशमः कोऽपि नास्ति।
- इसी प्रसंग से अध्यापक ‘दशमस्य विषये एका कथा’ सुनाते हैं — दश बालकाः स्नानाय नदीम् अगच्छन्, नदीं तीर्त्वा पारं गताः।
- प्रत्येक गणना करने वाला बालक स्वयं को छोड़कर गिनता है, अतः नव एव मिलते हैं; वे निश्चय करते हैं कि दशमः नद्यां मग्नः और विषण्णाः तूष्णीम् अतिष्ठन्।
- एकः पथिकः आकर सबको गिनता है, दश बालकाः मिलते हैं। वह नायक से कहता है — ‘दशमः त्वम् असि’। सब प्रहृष्टाः होकर आनन्देन गृहम् अगच्छन्।
