Chapter at a Glance
- पाठ का स्वरूप — यह ‘अतिरिक्तम् अध्ययनम्’ खण्ड का पहला पाठ है। श्रद्धा नामक छात्रा और अध्यापक का संवाद है। श्रद्धा का प्रश्न — ‘कः एषः स्वराणां प्लुतः नाम त्रिमात्रः ?’ — से पूरा पाठ आरम्भ होता है।
- चतुर्विधाः मात्राः — ह्रस्वः = एकमात्रः (१), दीर्घः = द्विमात्रः (२), प्लुतः = त्रिमात्रः (३), व्यञ्जनम् = अर्धमात्रम् (१/२) । तीन मात्राएँ केवल स्वरों में होती हैं; व्यञ्जनों में सदा अर्धमात्रा ही होती है।
- २२ स्वराः — समानाक्षराणि (अ आ अ३, इ ई इ३, उ ऊ उ३, ऋ ॠ ऋ३, ऌ – ऌ३) = १४ तथा सन्ध्यक्षराणि (ए ए३, ऐ ऐ३, ओ ओ३, औ औ३) = ८ — कुल २२ स्वर ।
- प्लुत का प्रयोग — दो स्थलों पर — (क) दूर से किसी को पुकारते समय ( हे३ राम ! , अत्र आगच्छ कुमार३ ! ), तथा (ख) वेदमन्त्र के आरम्भ में ओंकार के उच्चारण में ( ओ३म् — भूर्भुवः स्वः )।
- दो श्लोक — याज्ञवल्क्य-शिक्षा का ‘एकमात्रो भवेद् ह्रस्वः…’ मात्राओं की परिभाषा देता है; पाणिनीय-शिक्षा का ‘चाषस्तु वदते मात्रां…’ चाष (नीलकण्ठ) = १, वायस (काक) = २, शिखी (मयूर) = ३ तथा नकुल = १/२ मात्रा — इस प्रकार प्रकृति से मात्रा सिखाता है।
- मात्रा-गणना — शब्द को वर्णों में तोड़कर मात्राएँ जोड़ी जाती हैं — रामः = र्+आ+म्+अ+ः = १/२+२+१/२+१+१/२ = ४ १/२ मात्राः । अनुस्वार (ं) और विसर्ग (ः) दोनों की अर्धमात्रा होती है; इन्हें ‘अयोगवाहौ’ कहते हैं।
- विशेषं चिह्नम् — ॐ ‘ओम्/ओ३म्’ का प्राचीन पवित्र चिह्न है; ऽ ‘अवग्रहः’ है — यह कोई वर्ण नहीं, इसका उच्चारण नहीं होता; सन्धि में लुप्त हुए ‘अ’ को दिखाने के लिए लगाया जाता है (कः + अपि = कोऽपि / कोपि)।
