- यह क्या है — ‘अन्वयः’ शारदा का पहला परिशिष्ट है (पृष्ठ 161–166)। परिशिष्ट पाठ नहीं होता — उसमें न कथा है, न श्लोक-संग्रह, न प्रश्न-खण्ड। यहाँ केवल यह सिखाया गया है कि श्लोक पढ़ने की एक विधि होती है, और वह विधि क्या है।
- समस्या क्या है — पुस्तक स्वयं आरम्भ में कहती है — ‘सामान्यतः श्लोकेषु कर्तृपदं कर्मपदं तृतीयादिविभक्त्यन्तं पदं क्रियापदं विशेषणादिकं च छन्दसः अनुगुणं पूर्वापरं भवितुमर्हति।’ अर्थात् श्लोक में पदों का क्रम अर्थ के अनुसार नहीं, छन्द के अनुसार बनता है — इसीलिए पढ़ने वाले को पदों का पारस्परिक सम्बन्ध जोड़ने में कठिनाई (कष्टम्) होती है।
- समाधान क्या है — ‘अन्वय’ का अर्थ है पदों को गद्य के स्वाभाविक क्रम में सजाना — कर्ता, कर्म, क्रिया। पुस्तक कहती है कि जब तक यह क्रम न बने, तब तक श्लोक का अर्थ समझा ही नहीं जा सकता — ‘तदनन्तरमेव श्लोकस्य अर्थमवगन्तुं शक्यते’।
- दो विधियाँ — पुस्तक श्लोकान्वयविधि के दो भेद देती है — १. दण्डान्वयविधिः और २. खण्डान्वयविधिः । दण्डान्वय में पूरा श्लोक एक ही सीधी लकीर (दण्ड) की तरह एक बार में क्रम से लिखा जाता है; खण्डान्वय में श्लोक को टुकड़ों (खण्डों) में बाँटकर प्रश्नोत्तर के द्वारा एक-एक पद जोड़ा जाता है।
- दोनों के स्मृति-श्लोक — दोनों विधियों के नियम पुस्तक ने पद्य में दिए हैं, ताकि याद रह जाएँ — दण्डान्वय के लिए ‘आद्ये विशेषणं योज्यं…’ और खण्डान्वय के लिए ‘कर्तृ-कर्म-क्रियास्तावच्छ्लोके…’ (दो श्लोक)। ये कण्ठस्थ कर लेने योग्य हैं; परीक्षा में विधि का नाम पूछे जाने पर इन्हीं का उद्धरण दिया जाता है।
- अध्याहार — दण्डान्वय की सबसे उपयोगी बात यह सिखाई गई है कि श्लोक में कभी कर्ता या क्रिया छपी ही नहीं होती। तब पाठक को सुप्तं पदम् (छिपा हुआ पद) स्वयं जोड़ना पड़ता है — इसे अध्याहार कहते हैं, और जोड़े गए पद को कोष्ठक में लिखा जाता है, जैसे (केचन), (भवति), (यथा)।
- चार सहकारि-कारण — खण्डान्वय के लिए पुस्तक चार सहायक बातें बताती है — आकाङ्क्षा (एक पद सुनकर दूसरे को जानने की इच्छा), योग्यता (दो पदों के जुड़ने की पात्रता — ‘गगने पुष्पं विकसति’ में योग्यता नहीं), आसत्तिः (पदों का निकट-निकट बोला जाना), और तात्पर्यम् (वक्ता का अभिप्राय — ‘शतायुर्भव’ का अर्थ गिनकर सौ वर्ष नहीं, ‘चिरञ्जीवी भव’ है)।
- दो साधित उदाहरण — दण्डान्वय ‘शास्त्राण्यधीत्यापि भवन्ति मूर्खाः…’ श्लोक पर चार चरणों में दिखाया गया है — पदच्छेदः → दण्डान्वयः → विवरणम् → पदों को संख्या देकर क्रमशः योजनम्। खण्डान्वय ‘सम्पूर्णकुम्भो न करोति शब्दम्…’ श्लोक पर एक तालिका से दिखाया गया है जिसमें बाईं ओर शिक्षक के प्रश्न और दाईं ओर छात्रों के उत्तर दोनों पहले से भरे हुए हैं।
- तालिका को कैसे लें — पृष्ठ 165–166 की वह तालिका प्रश्न-पत्र नहीं, आदर्श संवाद (model dialogue) है — कक्षा में शिक्षक इसी क्रम से पूछते हैं और छात्र इसी ढंग से उत्तर देते हैं। इसे हल नहीं करना है, इसके साँचे को पकड़ना है : पहले क्रियापद, फिर कर्ता, फिर विशेषण, फिर कर्म, फिर अव्यय — और अन्त में पूरा अन्वय अपने आप बन जाता है।
